BATTLE OF THE CHAMPIONS 9

On 25th November 2016 at Luzhniki Sports Complex in Moscow, one of the greatest events of the year in the field of martial arts and martial sport took place – the Battle of The Champions 9 – School Vs School Martial Arts Forum. The event was opened byMr Yuri Trutnev - the Deputy Chair of the Russian Government, Plenipotentiary Presidential Representative for the Far Eastern Province, Co-Chairman of the Russian Union for Martial Arts, and Holder of the 5th Kyokushinkai Dan. Battle Of The Champions 9 – School Vs School was visited by over 7000 people, among whom were guests such as the Russian kickboxer Batu Hasikov, multiple-time world professional champion; Russian world boxing champion Natalya Rogozina; American movie-star and martial arts champion (7th Dan in Aikido) Stephen Seagal; Svetlana Zhurova, Olympic speed-skating champion; and many other guests. Event production was by SHANDESIGN.PRO under contract to the Russian Union of Martial Arts.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Battle of the Champions was held in 2016 in the format of inter-school School Vs School matches, using the universal rules for ring bouts between the finest representatives of the Russian schools of martial arts.

In all 12 different disciplines of martial arts and sporting contests were held, including kudo, vao dao, sambo, pankration, wushu, Burmese boxing, jiu-jitsu, grappling, Thai boxing, kickboxing, ashiqara karate and Kyokushinkai.

The greatest bout of the evening, beyond all doubt, was the world championship contest for WAKO kickboxing. The double world champion from Bulgaria, Vladimir Velev was defending his title, defeating Russian contender Vladimir Kolpakom.

The concept for the show arose from a combination and union of opposites – the art of classical opera, and martial arts. The event featured classical compositions by Vivaldi, Bizet, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Glinka and Grieg – performed by a symphony orchestra conducted by Konstantin Petrovich, a chorus directed by Valeriya Mazhkantsova; the 'Strings of St Petersburg' duo; the Moscow heavy-metal group FIEND; international music competition prize-winners Sergey Onischenko and Alexandra Sennikova; and soloists from Helikon Opera, Moscow – Maxim Petebeinox and Irina Reynard.
